How to Stop Hair Extensions Tangling in Humid Weather

by HairLocks Hair Extensions 12 Oct 2026 0 Comments

If you live somewhere warm and humid, you probably know how frustrating it can be when your hair starts to frizz, tangle or lose its smooth finish. When you wear hair extensions, humidity can make managing your hair feel even more challenging.

The good news is that a few simple changes to your daily routine can help keep your extensions smoother, softer and easier to manage.

Why do hair extensions tangle more in humid weather?

Humidity adds moisture to the air, which can affect how your natural hair behaves. Your hair may become frizzier, while friction, dryness and existing tangles can make your extensions harder to brush through. Hair extensions also need a little extra care because they don't receive natural oils from your scalp along their full length.

1. Brush your hair gently every day

Use a suitable extension brush and work in small sections, starting at the ends and gradually moving upwards. Hold the hair near the attachment area while brushing to reduce unnecessary pulling. Avoid forcing a brush through knots; gently separate tangles with your fingers first.

2. Keep your hair hydrated

Dry lengths and ends can become more prone to tangling, so use a suitable conditioner and moisturising products to keep your extensions feeling soft. Apply conditioner mainly to the mid-lengths and ends, following the care instructions for your particular extension method. Avoid heavy products directly on bonds, tapes or attachment points unless your stylist says they are suitable.

3. Dry your hair properly after washing

Gently squeeze excess water from your hair with a towel rather than rubbing vigorously. Carefully detangle it and dry your roots and attachment areas thoroughly, using a suitable heat protectant and moderate heat. Follow the aftercare advice for your specific extension method.

4. Reduce friction during the day

Friction from clothing, handbags, wind and movement can contribute to tangling. Try tying your hair loosely when exercising, detangling after windy weather, avoiding sleep with wet hair, and using a loose braid or smooth pillowcase if suitable for your extension method.

5. Look after your scalp and roots

Keeping the top of your hair clean is important, especially if you exercise regularly or live in a humid climate. When washing extensions, cleanse your scalp carefully and rinse thoroughly.

If you use a shower cap or another method to wash only your crown between full washes, make sure it is appropriate for your extension method and does not leave your roots damp or your scalp uncomfortable.

HairLocks created Crown Wash™ for people who want to wash the crown area while protecting the lower lengths of their hair. Learn more about Crown Wash™ here.

6. Keep up with your maintenance appointments

If your extensions repeatedly mat near the roots, become difficult to brush or feel uncomfortable, don't simply brush through the problem. Your extensions may need professional maintenance, or your installation and aftercare routine may need reviewing. Timing depends on the method and your stylist's recommendations.

Keep your extensions looking their best

Living in a humid climate doesn't mean you can't enjoy beautiful hair extensions. Gentle brushing, suitable conditioning, proper drying and regular maintenance can make a real difference to how manageable your hair feels.

If you're unsure which products or routine are right for your extensions, ask your extension specialist for advice tailored to your hair and installation method.

At HairLocks Hair Extensions on the Gold Coast, we believe good aftercare is an important part of enjoying your extensions long after you leave the salon.
